Mother Shipton's Christmas Experience runs 28 November to 24 December and is bookable now. It needs two tickets, not one. Harrogate's grotto has no dates.
There is one grotto near Harrogate you can book today with a date and a price against it, and one you cannot book at all yet.
The bookable one is Mother Shipton’s Magical Christmas Experience in Knaresborough, running Saturday 28 November to Thursday 24 December 2026. Harrogate BID has confirmed a Santa’s Grotto in the town centre on selected December dates, but has not said which dates.
Mother Shipton’s: dates, prices and the two-ticket trap
The single thing to get right before booking is that the Christmas Experience needs two separate tickets per family, not one. Mother Shipton’s own booking page puts this in capitals (bookings.mothershipton.co.uk):
- A Christmas Group Admission ticket, car or pedestrian, covering up to five people. This gets you into the park.
- A Santa Experience ticket for each child aged 0 to 12. This is what buys the grotto visit, the gift, the activity pack and the wristband.
Santa Experience tickets cannot be bought on their own. Everyone in your party, including babies in arms, counts towards the five-person headcount, and a sixth person needs an Additional Group Member ticket on top.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Christmas Group Admission, car or pedestrian, up to 5 people | £44 to £46 |
| Santa Experience ticket, per child aged 0 to 12 | £18 to £19 |
| Winter Woodland Walk, group of up to 5, no Santa | £44 peak, £46 super peak |
| Winter Woodland Walk, individual pedestrian, no Santa | £18 peak, £19 super peak |
The higher figure applies on the busiest dates. Mother Shipton’s names them: peak dates are 28 and 29 November and 18 December, and super peak dates are 5, 6, 12, 13 and 19 to 24 December.
So a family of four with two children under 12 is looking at roughly £80 to £84 plus the booking fee, and a party of five with three children is more.
Things that catch people out
- Parking is only included with a Car Admission ticket. Winter Woodland Walk tickets do not include parking at all. The nearest alternative is Conyngham Hall car park, about two minutes’ walk. You cannot leave the car there and walk into town.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your slot starts. Santa is at the start of the booked slot, and arriving early does not get you an earlier Santa. On 28 and 29 November for 3.50pm and 4pm slots you can arrive from 3.30pm and the site closes at 5.30pm. On December evening slots after 6.50pm you can arrive from 6.30pm and the site closes at 8.30pm. On 24 December the last slots are 1.50pm and 2pm and the site closes at 3.30pm.
- Card only. No cash is accepted anywhere inside the attraction.
- No dogs during the Christmas event, other than guide and assistance dogs.
- The adventure playground is closed for the whole Christmas period.
- Over-12s do not get a gift. Older siblings can go in to see Santa with a younger child, but need their own Santa Experience ticket to get a gift and activity pack. Babies under six months accompanying a paying child do not need one.
- The cave and Petrifying Well involve steps and are not reachable by pushchair or wheelchair. There is a shelter to park them before the steps. The grotto and activity huts may not suit all wheelchairs.
- The refund rule is narrow. If Santa goes ahead, the event counts as having gone ahead, even if the cave, the well, Beech Avenue or marshmallow toasting are closed by weather. Full refunds only apply if the whole Christmas Experience is cancelled.
The cheaper option without Santa
Winter Woodland Walks run on the same dates, 28 November to 24 December, and are pedestrian only. They cover the lit woodland trail, the cave, the Petrifying Well and the Christmas shop, plus the refreshment kiosks, but explicitly do not include a Santa visit, the Christmas stories or an activity pack, and you cannot add Santa on afterwards (Mother Shipton’s). For adults and teenagers, that is the sensible ticket.
Harrogate town centre: a grotto is confirmed, the dates are not
Harrogate BID’s Christmas 2026 announcement lists Santa’s Grotto among the attractions it is organising, “on selected dates throughout December, with further details to be announced”, and says a scheme will run to help children from lower-income families take part (Harrogate BID, 12 August 2026).
The grotto also appears in the officer briefing note in Harrogate Town Council’s August committee papers, under town centre activity alongside the ice trail, snow globe and curling rinks, so it is funded rather than aspirational (committee papers, 26 August 2026). The council has pledged £15,000 towards the wider programme, which the briefing note costs at about £80,000 in total.
There is no location, no date list and no price. The BID published the rest of its programme in August, so the grotto dates are the outstanding piece and are expected over the autumn. We will add them here when they land.
The rest of the festive line-up
Also confirmed for December, from the BID release and the council papers:
- RHS Garden Harlow Carr GLOW, the illuminated trail, returning on selected evenings. Pre-booking only.
- North Pole Post Office, run by Harrogate International Festivals, where children post letters to Father Christmas.
- Harrogate Ice Pavilion, a covered rink in Valley Gardens from 17 December. The BID says to 3 January, the council briefing says 6 January.
- Little Bird Made Christmas Market, Valley Gardens, 5 and 6 December.
- Ice Trail of five sculptures around the town centre, 12 December.
What to book, and when
- If you want Santa, book Mother Shipton’s now. It is the only grotto in the district with confirmed dates, and its cheapest slots are the non-peak weekdays in early and mid December.
- Avoid 19 to 24 December if price matters. Those are all super peak, adding £2 to the group ticket and £1 per child.
- Wait on the Harrogate town centre grotto. Nothing is bookable, and no date has been published.
- If your party is adults and teenagers, the Winter Woodland Walk is the same woodland for the same money without paying per child for a gift they will not get.
The pantomime dates and prices are on our Harrogate pantomime page, and the markets and fairs are on the Christmas market page. For getting there, see parking in Harrogate and the current roadworks and travel page.
