Collections run as normal on Monday 31 August. Which lid takes what in the Harrogate area, garden waste at £52, and the free tip registration you now need.

There is no change to bin collections on the bank holiday, Monday 31 August. North Yorkshire Council’s own bank holiday services page says to put your rubbish or recycling out as normal.

That is not luck. Since 21 April 2025 every collection in the Harrogate area has run Tuesday to Friday. The council said at the time that the point was to “reduce the need for bank holiday disruptions”, in its news release on the change. A Monday bank holiday cannot move a round that never runs on a Monday.

One thing has changed this year, and it catches people out at the gate: you now have to register your vehicle before you can use the tip.

Which bin is which in the Harrogate area

North Yorkshire runs different schemes in different parts of the county. In the Harrogate area, the council lists four containers:

  • black bin, black lid: household rubbish
  • black bin, blue lid: glass, cans, plastic and cartons
  • blue bags: paper and card
  • black bin, brown or green lid: garden waste, if you have paid for it

Which Harrogate bin takes what

A small number of properties get it the other way round: a red lid for glass, cans, plastic and cartons, and a blue lid for paper and card. If your lids are red and blue rather than blue and black, that is why.

Recycling must go in loose, clean and dry. Not bagged. The council will not take black plastic, takeaway coffee cups, pizza boxes, crisp packets, cling film, polystyrene, nappies, textiles or any batteries or vapes.

Batteries and vapes matter more than the rest of that list. The council’s warning is that they get crushed in the lorry, can ignite, and then set fire to everything around them. Both are taken free at any household waste recycling centre.

Finding your day

Use the council’s bin collection calendar. Enter a postcode and pick your address. Do not rely on a neighbour’s day: the April 2025 reshuffle moved households on the same street to different days.

Your bin has to be at the kerbside by 6am. Crews can start then.

Missed collections: you have two working days

This is the part the council buries, and it is the part with a deadline.

  • Wait until after 4pm on your collection day before reporting anything. Crews are still out until then.
  • Report it by 5pm two working days after your scheduled day. A Tuesday miss must be reported by 5pm on the Thursday.
  • After that the council will not come back and you wait for the next collection.

The council also checks the cameras on its lorries before it accepts a report. It will not return if the bin was out late, overfilled with the lid open, blocked by a parked car, contaminated, or tagged. Full rules are on the missed collections page for the Harrogate area.

Garden waste costs £52 and stops in December

The garden waste service is a paid subscription across North Yorkshire.

  • £52 a year for one 240-litre bin, emptied fortnightly.
  • Collections run March to early December. There is no winter service.
  • The fee is the same whenever you pay. Joining in August does not cost less.
  • Your licence pack arrives within 14 days and includes a sticker. Collections do not start until the sticker is on the bin.

Christmas trees are accepted, but only chopped up and inside the bin before your first collection of the year. No plastic bags, including ones sold as compostable. No food waste, no peelings, no pumpkins, no soil or turf.

Bulky collections start at £37

The bulky waste service has a minimum charge of £37 for up to two items. Households on a means-tested council tax reduction can get money off.

Beds, mattresses, sofas, tables, carpets, fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers and cookers are all taken. These are not:

  • builder’s waste, soil, rubble or garden waste
  • bathroom and kitchen fittings, doors and windows
  • car parts and tyres
  • radiators and boilers
  • pianos

If you cancel, you need to give two clear working days’ notice to get a refund. The council will not refund a failed collection caused by a locked gate, a blocked driveway, a loose dog, or an item that turned out to be heavier or different from what you booked.

The tip: you must register first, and it shuts on Wednesdays

From Monday 27 April 2026 you need a free registration to use any household waste recycling centre in North Yorkshire. Details are on the registration page.

  • Household registration covers cars, estate cars, people carriers, four by fours without cargo areas, motorbikes and cars towing trailers under 1.5 metres. Up to two vehicles per household, valid three years, unlimited visits.
  • Vans, pickups, campervans, motorhomes and cars towing trailers over 1.5 metres count as commercial-like. Those get 12 visits in 12 months and must be renewed annually.
  • Temporary registration covers doing a tip run for family or friends: four weeks, four visits. A hire car registration lasts seven days and four visits, and you must bring the hire paperwork and proof of address.

Three sites serve this area, and all three keep the same hours:

Site Address Notes
Harrogate Wetherby Road, HG3 1DE No commercial waste accepted here at all
West Harrogate Penny Pot Lane, HG3 2SN
Ripon Dallamires Crescent, Dallamires Lane, HG4 1TT

Opening hours are 8.30am to 5pm from April to September, and 8.30am to 4pm from October to March. Every site is closed on Wednesdays, and on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. They are open over the summer bank holiday.

DIY waste is free but rationed. Once a week you can bring either one item no bigger than 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm, or under 100 litres of DIY waste that fits in two 50-litre bags. Anything beyond that is charged and has to be paid by card at the site. All tyres are chargeable.

No tip in Knaresborough or Nidderdale

There is no fixed site at Knaresborough, Boroughbridge or Pateley Bridge. The council runs a mobile centre instead, on a handful of Saturdays a year.

  • Boroughbridge, car park off Back Lane, YO51 9AN: 12 September, 10 October, 7 November and 12 December 2026, 9am to 1pm.
  • Pateley Bridge, Bewerley Park, HG3 5BD: 5 September, 3 October, 31 October and 5 December 2026, 9am to 1pm, then 6 February and 6 March 2027.

The mobile centres take furniture, mattresses, sofas, paper, card, glass, cans, scrap metal, textiles, fridges, freezers, appliances, fluorescent tubes and wood. Garden waste is only accepted at the Pateley Bridge stop, not at Boroughbridge or any of the others.

What this page does not cover

North Yorkshire does not publish how often rubbish and recycling are collected in the Harrogate area as a single stated frequency, so we have not guessed at one. The calendar lookup is the only reliable answer for your address.

Christmas and New Year arrangements for 2026 have not been published yet. They appear on the council’s bank holiday services page in the weeks beforehand, and we will update this page when they are.
