Harrogate Christmas Market 2026 is on Cambridge Street over three weekends from 4 December. Valley Gardens makers market 5-6 Dec, ice rink from 17 Dec.

Harrogate Christmas Market 2026 is on. Zoom Events has listed a Christmas market on Cambridge Street across three December weekends, starting Friday 4 December, and Little Bird Made’s artisan market returns to Valley Gardens on 5 and 6 December. The big chalet event you may remember, the Harrogate Christmas Fayre, has no 2026 dates and is missing from every Harrogate BID announcement so far. Checked on 30 September 2026.

Two things changed for Christmas 2026 in Harrogate town centre, and only one of them has been announced out loud. Harrogate BID has published a new festive programme with an ice rink in Valley Gardens at the centre of it. It does not mention the Christmas Fayre, the chalet market that has run for the last five Decembers.

Knaresborough, meanwhile, has had its dates up for months.

Harrogate Christmas Market 2026: dates, times and where

These are the markets with published 2026 dates in Harrogate town itself, each from the organiser’s own listing.

The Cambridge Street market is run by Market Square Group Ltd, trading as Zoom Events, which lists it as three separate weekend events: street food from local to international, artisan groceries and sweet treats, and handmade crafts, clothing, jewellery and accessories (Zoom Events, weekend one, weekend two, weekend three). The organiser warns that opening times “may vary slightly up to and during the event”. Note the third weekend is Friday and Saturday only. None of the three listings mentions chalets, Harrogate BID or the Christmas Fayre, and Zoom Events has not said how many stalls there will be.

The Valley Gardens market is Little Bird Made’s, whose own dates page lists Harrogate on 4 October, 1 November, and 5 and 6 December 2026, the December pair marked “Christmas Weekend”, 10am to 3pm (Little Bird Made). Last year’s Christmas listing promised over 70 makers, street food and mulled wine, free entry, and a dog-friendly park. It is also the one market in Harrogate BID’s own 2026 programme. One trap: the organiser’s separate “Harrogate Christmas Market” page still shows last year’s dates (Saturday 6 and 13, Sunday 7 and 14 December), which were 2025’s weekends. The 5 and 6 December dates on its market-dates page are the current ones.

Where the old Harrogate Christmas Market went. The original Harrogate Christmas Market was held on Montpellier Hill. Its planned ninth edition, 18 to 21 November 2021, was cancelled after Harrogate Borough Council refused a licence for the Montpellier site on emergency-services advice about counter-terrorism security and Covid safety, and it has not come back (Harrogate Advertiser). The Christmas Fayre filled the gap from 2021 to 2025, organised by Market Place with support from North Yorkshire Council (North Yorkshire Council).

For a bigger indoor option, the Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair runs 26 to 29 November at the Showground.

Knaresborough Christmas Market: 5 and 6 December

The one date in this district you can book a train around. Knaresborough Christmas Market runs Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, 10am to 5pm on both days, centred on the historic Market Place but spilling through the town (knaresboroughchristmasmarket.co.uk).

The practical detail the organisers publish:

  • Free park and ride at GSPK on Manse Lane, HG5 8LF.
  • Firework finale at 4.30pm on the Sunday, over the viaduct, lasting about ten minutes. Free, no ticket. Best from the Castle grounds, Castle Top or the riverside.
  • Bring cash. There are only two ATMs in the town centre, at the Sainsbury’s Local by the bus station and the Tesco Express on the High Street, and the organisers warn they can run dry. There is a third at the Co-op petrol station, HG5 8LH, near the park and ride.
  • The Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s runs alongside it, and Mother Shipton’s Christmas experience must be pre-booked online.

Dog owners are asked to think about leaving pets at home on the Sunday, because of the crowds and the fireworks.

Harrogate’s 2026 festive programme

Harrogate BID announced its Christmas 2026 programme on 12 August, working with Visit North Yorkshire, North Yorkshire Council, Harrogate Town Council and Victoria Shopping Centre (Harrogate BID).

The BID also says a scheme will run to help children from lower-income families take part, and that further elements are still in planning.

Jason Maxwell, chief executive of Harrogate BID, said the programme was designed “to create a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere that encourages people to spend time in Harrogate, support local businesses and enjoy everything our town has to offer”.

The Christmas Fayre is not in it

The Harrogate Christmas Fayre, the run of wooden chalets on Cambridge Street, Market Place, Cambridge Crescent and Cambridge Road, ran for its fifth year from 5 to 14 December 2025. It does not appear anywhere in the BID’s 2026 announcement, and no 2026 dates have been published by the BID or by the operator.

The BID’s own Christmas Fayre information page is still the 2025 one, opening with “We hope your preparations are going well for Christmas 2025!” and giving last year’s dates and hours (harrogatebid.co.uk).

A second BID document has now done the same thing. On 9 September the BID published its August newsletter, in which the chair, Simon Midgley, sets out what is coming: “an exciting new programme of festive attractions and experiences coming to Harrogate in partnership with Visit North Yorkshire, North Yorkshire Council, Harrogate Town Council and Victoria Shopping Centre. From Santa’s Grotto and interactive curling rinks to the Ice Trail and Harrogate Ice Pavilion” (Harrogate BID newsletter, August 2026).

The Christmas Fayre is not in that sentence either. That is now two first-party BID documents, four weeks apart, both listing the town’s Christmas attractions and neither naming the chalet market that ran for the previous five years.

To be precise about what that does and does not prove: an absence from two announcements is not a cancellation, and nobody has said the Fayre has been dropped. What is true is that, re-checked on 20 September, there is still no published 2026 date for it, and the BID’s Christmas Fayre information page still opens with “We hope your preparations are going well for Christmas 2025!” and still lists last December’s dates and hours. Meanwhile the ice rink, the market in Valley Gardens and the ice trail all have dates and the rink has opened its bookings. We will update this page as soon as anything is published.

A third BID document, 29 September, is silent too. The BID’s September newsletter says only that “Christmas preparations [are] well underway and a programme of festive attractions and experiences taking shape across the town centre” (Harrogate BID newsletter, September 2026). No Fayre. What has appeared instead is the separate Zoom Events market on Cambridge Street, one of the Fayre’s old streets, over three weekends in December (dates and hours above).

Harrogate Ice Pavilion: the detail, and the early-booking discount

The ice rink is the one thing in Harrogate’s 2026 programme that is fully booked and priced up, and its own site carries more detail than the BID announcement. Checked on 12 September 2026.

  • Dates. Thursday 17 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day.
  • Where. The upper tennis courts in Valley Gardens, on real ice inside a covered event marquee, so a wet afternoon does not cancel your session.
  • Session length. “All sessions are 45 minutes in duration.”
  • Six kinds of session, which is worth knowing before you book a general ticket: Public sessions for ages 5 and over, Parent, Family and Toddler sessions for ages 2 to 4, Relaxed sessions capped at 50 skaters for anyone who needs a quieter rink, school and home education visits, Disco sessions for ages 5 and over, and private hire for groups of up to 100.
  • Skating aids. Penguins and polar bears for younger children, reservable in advance at £7.50.
  • Spectators are free. You do not need a ticket to watch somebody else skate.
  • Booking. Through the rink’s own site, which warns that “popular sessions are expected to sell out”.

The deadline worth acting on: when we read the booking page on 12 September it advertised a 20% discount on bookings made before midnight on 30 September 2026, excluding school and home education sessions and private hires. That deadline has now passed, so expect full price from 1 October unless the rink extends it. The Christmas school holiday sessions are still the ones most likely to go first.

One caveat on that offer. We could not re-read it on 20 September: the rink’s own site now answers automated requests with a bot challenge rather than the page, so the discount is quoted from our 12 September reading and not from today. Open harrogate-ice-pavilion.com in a browser before you count on the 20 per cent, and before you assume the deadline has not moved.

Christmas lights switch-ons

Harrogate has no switch-on event in the BID’s 2026 programme. The lights go on without a ceremony.

Knaresborough does hold one, called Bright Friday, and although no 2026 date has been published the town council has stated the rule. Its own write-up says “the last Friday in November has become better known as Black Friday. Bright Friday is Knaresborough’s antidote to this” (Knaresborough Town Council). The last Friday in November 2026 is Friday 27 November. Treat that as the likely date rather than a confirmed one until the council posts it.

Ripon also holds a switch-on in Market Square, but its city council page carries no year at all and reads “Saturday 18th November”, which cannot be this year: 18 November 2026 is a Wednesday (riponcity.gov.uk). Do not plan around that page.

Out of town

RHS Garden Harlow Carr runs its Glow illuminated trail on selected dates from 26 November to 30 December 2026. Entry is by pre-booked ticket only and the popular slots sell out (RHS).

Harrogate Theatre’s pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, opens on 27 November and runs to 17 January. Dates, prices and the accessible performances are on our Harrogate pantomime page.

What it means for you

  • Knaresborough on 5 and 6 December is the only fully confirmed market weekend in the district. Use the free park and ride and take cash.
  • Harrogate town centre has a dated Christmas market: Cambridge Street on 4-6, 11-13 and 18-19 December, plus Valley Gardens on 5 and 6 December. The first weekend is the one where both run at once.
  • The chalet Christmas Fayre has no 2026 date. Do not book travel around it.
  • The ice rink in Valley Gardens runs into the school holidays, 17 December to 3 January, closed on Christmas Day. Sessions are 45 minutes; the 20% early-booking offer ended on 30 September.
  • Book Harlow Carr Glow early rather than turning up.

Car parks and charges are in our guide to parking in Harrogate, live closures and rail work are on the roadworks and travel page, and there is more in things to do in Harrogate. The district’s bonfire and firework displays are tracked separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Harrogate Christmas market in 2026?

Yes. Zoom Events runs a Christmas market on Cambridge Street, HG1 1RX, on Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December, Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December, and Friday 18 to Saturday 19 December 2026. Little Bird Made holds an artisan Christmas market in Valley Gardens on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, 10am to 3pm.

What are the Harrogate Christmas market opening times?

On Cambridge Street the organiser lists Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm, and says times may vary slightly. The Valley Gardens market runs 10am to 3pm on both days.

Is the Harrogate Christmas Fayre happening in 2026?

No dates have been published. Three Harrogate BID documents, dated 12 August, 9 September and 29 September 2026, set out Christmas plans without mentioning it, and the BID’s Fayre information page still describes 2025. That is not a formal cancellation, but there is nothing to plan around yet.

What happened to the original Harrogate Christmas Market on Montpellier Hill?

Its 2021 edition was cancelled when Harrogate Borough Council refused a licence for the Montpellier Hill site on counter-terrorism and Covid safety advice, and it has not returned. The Christmas Fayre ran in its place from 2021 to 2025.

When is the Knaresborough Christmas Market 2026?

Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, 10am to 5pm, centred on the Market Place, with a free park and ride from GSPK on Manse Lane and a firework finale at 4.30pm on the Sunday. More on our Knaresborough Christmas Market page.

Is there an ice rink in Harrogate this Christmas?

Yes. Harrogate Ice Pavilion, a covered real-ice rink on the upper tennis courts in Valley Gardens, runs from Thursday 17 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, closed on Christmas Day. Sessions last 45 minutes and spectators are free.
