Swan Road and Crescent Road stay shut to 23 October, and Coppice Way closes 12 to 20 October. Plus Dragon Road car park dates, the A1(M) and trains.

Swan Road is still shut, and will be until 23 October. North Yorkshire Council’s September highways update says Yorkshire Water’s water main renewal, which was due to finish on 11 September, hit “unforeseen difficulties encountered on site”. The closure now runs until 23 October (Highways Update, September 2026).

Updated 3 October: re-checked every source. No newer Harrogate works list has been published since 15 September. The overnight Skipton Street and Back Unity Grove closures have ended. The A1(M) is clear at every Harrogate junction until at least 8 October, the Harrogate line has no engineering work booked, and the council’s Dragon Road car park closes for Convention Centre events on 8 October.

That puts Swan Road and Crescent Road on the same reopening date. Both connect the A61 Ripon Road side of town to the Crescent Gardens and Convention Centre end, and both are shut until 23 October.

The next new road closure is Coppice Way, shut for 9 days from Monday 12 October to Tuesday 20 October for a Northern Powergrid fuse upgrade.

If you park at Dragon Road by the Convention Centre, check the dates first: the council closes it for exhibition traffic from Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 October, and again from Tuesday 13 to Friday 23 October, taking its two overlapping October closures together (closure dates).

Check today’s closures first

North Yorkshire Council publishes a live roadworks map covering council and utility works across the county, and you can sign up for email alerts from the map itself. Read it with the council’s own caveat in mind: it relies on third parties such as utility companies to provide and update the information, and emergency works may not appear on the map until hours before they start. For motorway and trunk-road works, use National Highways’ seven-day closure report.

Closed now

North Yorkshire Council’s newest Harrogate list was published through Harrogate Town Council on 15 September, and on 3 October it was still the newest. These jobs are inside their published dates today:

  • Swan Road, Yorkshire Water water main renewal, until 23 October. Extended from 11 September.
  • Crescent Road, Yorkshire Water, until 23 October.
  • Lady Lane, Yorkshire Water sewer pipeline, until November.
  • Raglan Street and a short section of Station Parade by Library Gardens, footway reconstruction and kerbing, lane closures and parking suspensions 7.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. It started on 20 July and runs 19 weeks, which takes it to the end of November.
  • Oak Beck Footbridge on the A59, started 8 September, until November, with two overnight road closures still to be dated.

Finished on paper, not yet confirmed: the Rossett Green Lane and Burn Bridge sewer closure was notified to end on 28 September, the Beryl Burton Cycleway resurfacing on 25 September, and the overnight Skipton Street and Back Unity Grove survey closures on the morning of 2 October. The council has published nothing saying any of them overran.

Two things worth knowing about Raglan Street, because they are easy to miss. The work runs in six phases, one side of the street at a time, and off-street parking behind the affected frontages cannot be reached while the kerbs, block paving and flags are being rebuilt. The council’s advice is to arrange parking elsewhere for those phases, and it gives an email address for access needs, area6.boroughbridge@northyorks.gov.uk, and the customer service line on 0300 131 2 131.

Two older jobs have no published end date and may still be live: the Harrogate Spring Water section 50 works on Penny Pot Lane, Cornwall Road and Harlow Moor Road, and the Northern Powergrid work on Jennyfield Drive and Duchy Road, which was scheduled to finish on 13 September and has not been confirmed either way.

What it means for you: if your route into town from the north uses Swan Road or Crescent Road, nothing changes until late October. Use the A61 Ripon Road and Kings Road, and expect Cornwall Road and Kent Road to carry the overflow. If you live off Coppice Way, the next closure on your doorstep starts on 12 October.

Further off, and still without dates: remedial surfacing and kerbing at the Tesco roundabout, which the council hoped to finish before the end of the calendar year; resurfacing at Stockwell Road and Wetherby Road in Knaresborough; repairs on the Bilton Lane cycleway; an accessibility scheme at North Park Road; and permanent replacements for the temporary bolt-down traffic islands installed around Harrogate in 2019, with delivery likely in the new year.

Knaresborough: Waterside is a separate, longer problem

The collapse of Viaduct Terrace above Waterside is not a roadworks job and will not clear this autumn. The council told the area committee that repairs are not expected to start before summer 2027. On 23 September the council directly awarded a contract, estimated at £350,000, to rebuild the wall; the detail is in Knaresborough Viaduct Terrace £350,000 contract awarded.

A59 Kex Gill: open since 25 August

The largest highways project North Yorkshire Council has ever run opened to traffic on Tuesday 25 August 2026 (council announcement). The moorland pass between Harrogate and Skipton had slipped 15 times since 2000, costing more than £6 million in repairs and closing repeatedly.

What is open, and what is not:

  • the majority of the new 4.2km route is carrying traffic
  • a 30mph restriction applies while the rest of the work is finished
  • two of the three lanes are available, the third being a crawler lane for slow traffic
  • the tie-ins to the existing road at each end, and the landscaping, are still to be completed

The council warned in May that overnight closures of the A59 would be needed to surface both tie-in points, “with dates to be confirmed” (council news, 1 May 2026). As of 3 October it has published no dates, and none appear in its Harrogate works list.

Cllr Malcolm Taylor, the executive member for highways and transportation, said: “This is a moment that we have been aiming for throughout such a complex and detailed highways project.” The baseline cost is £68.8 million, of which the Department for Transport is funding £56.1 million (scheme page). The council also reports 12,700 native trees planted, four kilometres of natural stone walling, and new routes for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

What it means for you: the Skipton run is usable and no longer routed over the landslip section, but plan for 30mph and two lanes through the new stretch until the tie-ins are done.

A1(M): clear at the Harrogate junctions until at least 8 October

On 3 October we read National Highways’ seven-day closure report for 2 to 8 October, last updated on 2 October. Nothing is listed at junction 46 (Wetherby), junction 47 (Flaxby), junction 48 (Boroughbridge), junction 49 or junction 50 (Ripon), or anywhere from junction 42 up to junction 55, so the junctions Harrogate, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge and Ripon drivers use are clear all week.

The closures within reach are near Doncaster and at Scotch Corner:

  • Nights of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, 8pm to 6am: A1(M) northbound closed between Redhouse and Barnsdale Bar, with the Barnsdale Bar exit slip shut, for carriageway improvements. The signed diversion is via the A638 and A6201. The last night ends at 6am on Monday 5 October.
  • Nights of Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October, 9pm to 6am: the northbound junction 37 exit slip and junction 36 entry slip near Doncaster close for cleaning and maintenance. The diversion is via the A635, A638, A630 and M18.
  • Nights of Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October, 8pm to 6am: slip roads and one side of the circulatory at junction 56, Barton, north of Scotch Corner, close in turn for resurfacing. Check which slip is shut on the night before you head for the A66 or Darlington.

The junction 43 to 44 widening south of Wetherby finished on 25 September, as National Highways scheduled (Yorkshire and North East maintenance schemes). The report for 2 October onwards carries no closures there.

Trains: nothing on the Harrogate line, Leeds to York buses on 17 and 18 October

We checked National Rail’s planned and unplanned engineering works on 3 October. Nothing is booked on the Leeds to Harrogate to York line itself, but two jobs either side of it matter if you change trains.

  • Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October: all lines between Leeds and Church Fenton / Selby close for the Transpennine Route Upgrade. Northern’s local stopping trains between Leeds and York do not run and buses replace them; CrossCountry trains to the North East and Scotland do not call at Leeds (National Rail). The Harrogate line is a way round between the two cities that weekend.
  • Sundays 11, 18 and 25 October: RMT conductor strikes on TransPennine Express, with only a limited service and no replacement buses. The strike called for Sunday 4 October has been suspended (National Rail).

Late-night LNER travellers from London should know about three jobs:

  • Friday 9 October: the 22:40 and 23:33 King’s Cross to Leeds trains do not call at Wakefield Westgate; a bus runs from Doncaster (National Rail).
  • Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 October: the 22:40 King’s Cross to Leeds is diverted and misses Wakefield Westgate (National Rail).
  • Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 October: all lines between Doncaster and York close overnight. The 23:08 King’s Cross to York ends at Doncaster, with a bus to York (National Rail).

The Huddersfield closure for the Transpennine Route Upgrade runs until Sunday 4 October (National Rail), so changes at Leeds for Manchester return to normal from Monday 5 October.

Station Gateway: still not started

The Harrogate Station Gateway scheme is going ahead in its scaled-back form, with Station Parade keeping two traffic lanes and no pedestrianisation of James Street (council news, July 2024). The council signed the construction contract and funding agreements for the £14.3 million project in November 2025 (council news), but the project page still carries no construction start date. Nothing is dug up on Station Parade yet, although the Raglan Street footway scheme does touch a short section of Station Parade by Library Gardens.

The key routes, for orientation

  • A61: the north-south spine, Ripon Road in from the north, Leeds Road out to the south.
  • A59: the east-west route, to York past the A1(M) one way and over Kex Gill to Skipton the other.
  • A661 Wetherby Road: the south-eastern approach, and the busiest way to the A1(M) southbound.
  • A1(M) junctions: J47 (Flaxby) is the Harrogate and Knaresborough junction, upgraded with extra lanes and signals in 2022 (Harrogate Informer); J48 serves Boroughbridge and J50 Ripon (National Highways).

There is no park and ride in Harrogate: the council’s park and ride page lists services only in Scarborough and Whitby.

What parking actually costs

On-street parking in central Harrogate is charged 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sundays, in two zones: the inner zone runs from £1.30 for 30 minutes to £7.10 for the 3-hour maximum, the outer zone from £1 to £6.10 (council street parking page). You can pay by phone with the AppyParking app across the town centre.

The council’s Dragon Road car park (HG1 5DB, by the Convention Centre) is the value option for longer stays: £3.80 for 4 hours, £7.10 for 12 hours, £1.40 for evenings after 6pm, with 76 spaces, 10 EV points and free parking for blue badge holders and motorcycles. It sometimes closes for Convention Centre exhibitions, so have a fallback on event days (car park page). The council’s list has it shut from 8 to 10 October, 13 to 23 October, 28 October to 2 November, and on four runs of dates in November. At the railway station there are 117 spaces including 6 accessible bays (National Rail); it fills on weekday mornings, and the train times page covers the services they feed.

Buses: the 36 and the local network

Harrogate’s buses are run by Transdev as The Harrogate Bus Company. The flagship is the 36, running Ripon to Harrogate to Leeds roughly every 10 to 15 minutes through the daytime, with evening journeys past 11pm, calling at Ripley, Killinghall and Harewood along the way (route 36 timetable). Around town, the 1A, 1B and 1C shuttle between Harrogate and Knaresborough, the 7 runs to Wetherby and Leeds, the 24 serves Pateley Bridge and Nidderdale, and the 59 DalesBus crosses to Skipton. What roads are closed in Harrogate right now?

Swan Road and Crescent Road are both closed for Yorkshire Water until 23 October, and Lady Lane has sewer works until November. Has Swan Road reopened?

No. Yorkshire Water’s water main renewal was due to finish on 11 September 2026, but the council’s September update says the works “have been extended as a result of unforeseen difficulties encountered on site” and the closure “will now remain in place until the 23rd October 2026”.

Has Rossett Green Lane reopened?

It should have. The closure for the sewer connection at Burn Bridge was notified for 20 days, from 9 September to 28 September 2026, and the council has published no extension. Check the live map before you rely on it.

Is the new Kex Gill road open?

Yes. The majority of the new 4.2km A59 route opened to traffic on Tuesday 25 August 2026. A 30mph limit applies and two of the three lanes are in use while the tie-ins to the old road and the landscaping are finished.

Is the A1(M) closed this week?

Not at the Harrogate junctions, or anywhere from junction 42 up to junction 55, up to 8 October. The nearest closure is near Doncaster: northbound between Redhouse and Barnsdale Bar, 8pm to 6am, on the nights of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, diverted via the A638 and A6201.

Are there any train disruptions from Harrogate this week?

Not on the Harrogate line. National Rail’s engineering works lists on 3 October carried nothing on the Leeds to Harrogate to York route. Some late-night LNER trains from King’s Cross are changed on 9 and 12 to 14 October, buses replace Leeds to York stopping trains via Church Fenton on 17 and 18 October, and TransPennine Express conductors strike on Sundays 11, 18 and 25 October.

Is the Harrogate Station Gateway happening?

Yes, in scaled-back form: Station Parade keeps two traffic lanes and James Street is not being pedestrianised. The council signed the £14.3 million construction contract in November 2025, but the project page still carries no construction start date and no work has begun.

Where is the cheapest parking in Harrogate town centre?
