Scamp & Dude has opened its first permanent northern shop at 2 James Street, Harrogate: two floors, 2,100 sq ft, opposite the station, open seven days.
The British fashion brand Scamp & Dude has opened a shop on James Street in Harrogate. It is the company’s first permanent store in the north of England.
The shop is at 2 James Street, opposite the railway station. It opened at 9.30am on Friday 9 October, according to Harrogate BID’s announcement. The BID is the business improvement district that represents town centre traders.
The shop
The BID’s release gives these details:
- two floors, with more than 2,100 sq ft of shop space
- womenswear collections
- a “Bolt Room”, a private fitting room customers can book in advance for a group, with complimentary refreshments
- a year-round programme of events and community activities, still to be announced
The release says the company spent more than three years looking for the right site in Harrogate. The opening coincides with the brand’s tenth anniversary.
Harrogate is now one of five Scamp & Dude shops listed on the company’s own stores page. The others are in Marlow, Battersea Power Station, Brighton and Clarks Village in Somerset. Harrogate is the only one north of London.
Opening hours
The company lists the Harrogate shop’s hours as:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday | 9.30am to 5.30pm |
| Sunday | 10.30am to 4.30pm |
The shop’s phone number is 01423 297004.
Who is behind it
Scamp & Dude was founded in 2016 by Jo Tutchener Sharp OBE, who is still its chief executive. It is a certified B Corp, a label for companies assessed on their social and environmental record.
The BID’s release says the company has given more than £4.4 million in cash and products through its charity programmes. Those include:
- more than 93,000 scarves given to women starting chemotherapy
- more than 10,000 “Superhero Sleep Buddies” soft toys given to children who are seriously ill or have lost a parent
Jason Maxwell, Harrogate BID’s chief executive, said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Scamp & Dude to Harrogate, particularly as the brand has chosen our town for its first permanent store in the North.”
He added: “James Street is a key part of Harrogate’s shopping offering, and seeing a recognised British brand invest in such a prominent location is really encouraging.”
A changing James Street
James Street is one of the town’s main shopping streets, but some of its space is turning into homes. North Yorkshire Council’s planning register shows two recent prior approvals on the street:
- the first and second floors of 21 James Street, to become six flats (permitted 17 September 2025, reference 25/02602/PCBSR)
- 25 James Street, from commercial use to eight homes (permitted 9 January 2026, reference 25/04075/PCBSR)
Prior approval is the fast-track route for turning shops and offices into housing. Both decisions confirm the change is allowed; neither says when work will start.
An application for the new shop’s illuminated fascia letters and hanging sign, reference 26/06104/ADV, was registered on 23 September. The register shows it as still awaiting a decision.
