Lloyds on Cambridge Crescent shuts on 19 November and its cash machine goes with it. Where Lloyds customers can pay in, take out cash and see someone instead.
Lloyds Bank’s Harrogate branch at 8-11 Cambridge Crescent closes for good on Thursday 19 November. The cash machine at the branch will close as well.
The bank’s branch closure notice gives the reason plainly. “With most now using our app, online services or phone banking, we’re closing our Harrogate branch,” it says. Its branch page confirms the date.
The branch is open until then: 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays (10am on Wednesdays) and 9.30am to 3pm on Saturdays.
Where to bank instead
Lloyds customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch. The bank’s notice lists these alternatives:
| What you need | Where Lloyds sends you |
|---|---|
| A branch | Halifax, 24 Oxford Street, HG1 1PU. Weekdays 9.30am to 4.30pm (10am Wednesdays), Saturdays 9.30am to 1pm |
| A free cash machine | Halifax, 24 Oxford Street |
| Cash in and out over a counter | Harrogate Post Office, Victoria Shopping Centre, HG1 1TU. Cheques are not accepted |
| A shared banking hub | Knaresborough Banking Hub, 15 Kirkgate, HG5 8AD. Weekdays 9am to 5pm |
| Paying in cash near home | Any PayPoint, using the Lloyds app. Up to £300 a day and £600 a month |
| Cash with no purchase | Shops offering cashback at the till, from 1p to £50 |
Knaresborough is about three miles east of Harrogate town centre. The hub is run by the Post Office, and a Lloyds community banker visits on set days. The days are listed on Cash Access UK’s hub finder.
No extra cash services
Every branch closure now triggers an independent check of cash access by LINK, the cash machine network. Its assessment for Harrogate, completed on 10 June, found no gap.
LINK stopped at the first stage of its three-step process. It recommended nothing new, because Harrogate still has:
- free cash withdrawals and deposits for personal accounts
- cash services for business accounts, including coins
- a Post Office
- another bank branch
- a building society branch
- a cash machine
The 28-day window to ask LINK to review that decision has long passed.
Who Lloyds consulted
Lloyds’ second notice, dated August, says it told the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, the Post Office, the National Federation of Sub Postmasters, Citizens Advice and the Chamber of Commerce. It says some customers raised “concerns, disappointment or questions”.
The bank says it has phoned customers who use the branch as their main way of banking, and held a digital support event in the branch. It has also given customers who need help online the details of the Digital Helpline, a free phone service.
What it means for you
- If you pay in cash for a business, the Halifax counter on Oxford Street and the Post Office both take it. Check business deposit limits with Lloyds first, on 0345 072 5555.
- If you rely on the Cambridge Crescent cash machine, the nearest free alternative Lloyds names is outside the Halifax on Oxford Street. LINK’s cash locator shows others.
- If you need a cheque paid in, use a Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch or the Lloyds app. The Post Office does not accept Lloyds cheques.
- If you need help with the app, the branch staff can still show you before 19 November. Personal customers can call 0345 300 0000.
Parking for the Oxford Street end of town is on our parking in Harrogate page.
