Johnsons Nurseries has given 1,300 daffodil and crocus bulbs to Martin House Children's Hospice at Boston Spa, after £1,500 of plants for its rebuilt grounds.
Johnsons Nurseries, the family-run commercial nursery at Whixley, has given 1,300 bulbs to Martin House Children’s Hospice at Boston Spa. Daffodils and crocuses are among them, and they are meant to flower across the hospice grounds in spring 2027.
It is the nursery’s second gift to the gardens. It earlier gave £1,500 worth of plants to the hospice’s redevelopment, known as THE BUILD, which the nursery says cost £21.9 million and was finished in June 2025. That work added a new children’s wing, a wing for teenagers and a wellbeing centre.
A hospice 12 miles from the nursery
Martin House is 12 miles from Johnsons’ North Yorkshire headquarters. It cares for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions from across Yorkshire, and for their families: planned stays, symptom management, end-of-life care and bereavement support.
The plants from the first donation went into the outdoor spaces around the new buildings. The nursery says they were used to make calm, therapeutic places where families can sit, relax and reflect. Its news page describes the gardens as somewhere for families “to play, relax, reflect and spend precious time together”.
What the nursery said
Graham Richardson, Group Managing Director at Johnsons Nurseries, said: “As a Yorkshire family business, supporting organisations within our local community is incredibly important to us. Martin House provides an invaluable service to children and families across the region, so we were delighted to contribute plants to the redevelopment.”
On the nursery’s own website he added: “We are incredibly proud to continue supporting Martin House and the invaluable work they do for children and families across Yorkshire. Having previously donated plants to help restore the gardens following the redevelopment, we’re delighted to contribute thousands of bulbs. We hope they’ll bring a welcome splash of colour to the grounds next spring and provide enjoyment for the families who spend time there.”
Other local causes
Johnsons was founded in 1921 and is now in its third generation. Alongside Martin House it has given plants to Henshaws and York Cares, and has worked on community initiatives with them, the nursery says.
Earlier this month the nursery supplied more than 17,000 plants and trees for the new gardens at Rockliffe, the resort near Darlington.
More about the hospice’s work, and how to support it, is on the Martin House website. The nursery’s news is on its website, and it can be reached on 01423 330234.
