Every food business in the Harrogate area rated in October scored the top 5, from Bettys at Harlow Carr to the reopened Mother Shipton Inn. The full list.
Every food business in the Harrogate area that was given a hygiene rating in October scored the top mark of 5, “very good”. That is 36 out of 36, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register for North Yorkshire Council (FSA ratings), which we downloaded in full on 2 November.
No other month this year comes close. In the three months before, between one in six and one in three premises rated each month came in at 4 or lower. The register holds only each business’s current rating, so earlier months lose any premises that have since been re-rated; the true share of lower scores in those months may have been a little higher.
We counted every premises with an HG or YO51 postcode: Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon, Pateley Bridge, Boroughbridge and the villages around them. The dates below are the inspection dates the register records. Ratings from inspections late in the month can take a few weeks to appear, so a handful more October results may still be added.
The month in numbers
| Month | Premises rated | Rated 5 | Rated 4 or lower |
|---|---|---|---|
| July | 60 | 50 | 10 |
| August | 38 | 25 | 13 |
| September | 49 | 41 | 8 |
| October (so far) | 36 | 36 | 0 |
August was the weakest month, with one premises rated 2 and one rated 1.

What it means for you
- A rating is a snapshot of the day of the inspection. It covers hygiene, the condition of the premises and how food safety is managed, not the quality of the food.
- You can look up any premises, and the date it was last inspected, on the FSA’s ratings site.
- Businesses can appeal a rating within 21 days, ask for a re-inspection once they have made improvements, and publish a right to reply alongside their rating on the FSA site.
- Ratings come from North Yorkshire Council’s environmental health officers. To report a food hygiene concern, use the council’s food safety pages.
